The government in Tanzania has announced a new higher fuel price that will come into effect today, Wednesday, April 1, 2026.
According to the Energy and Water Utilities Regulatory Authority of Tanzania (EWURA), the price hike is due to a significant increase caused by the ongoing conflict in the Middle East against Iran.
The price of a liter of petrol in Dar Es Salaam has risen to 956 Tanzanian shillings, which is equivalent to 37 US cents, sparking strong emotions among the nation’s citizens.
According to the new prices in Dar es Salaam, petrol will now be sold at Tanzanian shillings 3,820, diesel at 3,806, and kerosene at 3,684.
In Tanga, petrol will be sold at Sh3,881, Diesel at Sh3,867 while Kerosene will be sold at Sh3,745.
In Mtwara, petrol will be sold at Sh3,912, diesel at Sh3,898, kerosene at Sh3,777, while in other areas petrol will be over Sh4,000.
Tanzanian opposition leader and economist Zitto Kabwe has called on the government to help citizens shoulder the burden of fuel.
In his post on X’s Twitter account, Zitto Kabwe said:
“Today we woke up to new oil prices, the prices we had expected following the ongoing US and Israeli attacks on Iran. As is the case everywhere in the world, prices have risen sharply and the cost of living will be very high. The government should help the citizens bear these costs.”
According to Ewura, attacks on oil wells, warehouses and refineries in the Middle East, as well as the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, which passes through approximately 20 percent of all oil in the world, are contributing factors to the cost of importing the product into Tanzania.
