Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) headquarters have arrested a man over a viral TikTok video allegedly containing threats.

Reports indicate that the video appeared to reference threats against President William Ruto, including claims of a possible coup or “spiritual war.”

The DCI emphasized that although freedom of expression is protected under the Constitution, it does not extend to statements that threaten peace or endanger others.

According to investigators, the suspect reportedly went into hiding soon after the video gained traction on various social media platforms. Using forensic analysis and intelligence-led investigations, detectives traced and arrested him at his hideout in the Gachage area of Kiganjo within Gatundu South Sub-County.

Authorities believe he retreated to the remote location in an attempt to avoid arrest as officers tracked his digital activity following the video’s circulation.

He is currently being held at the DCI headquarters as he undergoes processing ahead of his planned court appearance to face charges linked to his alleged online conduct.

The arrest comes amid heightened efforts by the government and security agencies to monitor digital platforms and crack down on hate speech, incitement, and content that promotes violence.

In a statement, the DCI reiterated that while freedom of expression is a constitutional right, it is not absolute and must not infringe on the rights and safety of others.

The agency further warned that it will take firm action against anyone who misuses social media to incite unrest or threaten national security, affirming its commitment to safeguarding peace and stability.
