Winnie Odinga Breaks Silence on Raila’s Final Hours

Winnie Odinga has revealed that she spent two hours with her father on the night before his death, describing their final moments together as private and deeply personal.

In an interview with Citizen TV on January 27, Winnie said the conversations she shared with the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga were not meant for the public.

“We sat in his room for two hours talking about many things,” she said, adding that she would not disclose the details out of respect for their privacy.

She warned against speculation over what her father may have said in his final hours, noting that such claims were inappropriate and disrespectful to his memory.

“There will be people who say he said this or that, but I don’t think it is right to bring such matters into the public space,” she stated.

Winnie also spoke about her long professional and personal relationship with Raila, saying she had worked closely with him for the past 15 years across different political periods.

She noted that while they shared similarities, they also challenged and pushed each other, describing their bond as layered and complex.

“He was my father, my party leader, my mentor and my closest friend, and dealing with this loss has been very hard,” she said.

Raila Odinga passed away on October 15, 2025, at the age of 80 while receiving treatment in India.

He was buried four days later at his family home in Kang’o ka Jaramogi, Bondo, Siaya County, during a state funeral that included full military honours.

The ceremony followed a presidential directive by President William Ruto, who ordered that Raila be accorded national and military honours in recognition of his service to the country.

The funeral was attended by several local and international leaders, among them President Ruto, former President Uhuru Kenyatta and former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo.
