A group of youth in Nanyuki town has announced plans to hold protests on Monday, coinciding with Madaraka Day, over reported continued activity at Laikipia Air Base linked to a proposed Ebola quarantine facility.
The planned demonstrations will see the youths march through Nanyuki streets and present their grievances to government offices, demanding the immediate cancellation of the project at the Base. This comes despite a recent High Court ruling temporarily halting the establishment of any Ebola quarantine or treatment facility in Laikipia County.

The protesters argue that there was insufficient public participation in the decision-making process and that residents were not adequately consulted before the project was initiated. They insist that local voices must be considered before any further action is taken.
They also claim the facility could pose a health risk and damage Laikipia’s image as a leading tourist destination, warning that Ebola-related fears may discourage visitors and investors, ultimately hurting the local economy.
Business operators in the area have echoed similar concerns, saying ongoing uncertainty could negatively affect tourism and trade, with reduced customer numbers leading to losses for hotels and other service providers.
Some residents expressed strong sentiments, saying they are prepared to take part in the protests and insisting the facility should not proceed, citing fears about Ebola and its risks.

The concerns follow a High Court decision in Nairobi that temporarily stopped the government from setting up or operating any Ebola-related quarantine, isolation, or treatment facility under any arrangement with foreign governments or agencies.

The court also barred the admission or transfer of individuals exposed to or infected with Ebola under the disputed arrangement until the case is fully heard and determined.
The orders were issued after the Katiba Institute filed an urgent petition challenging the alleged agreement between Kenya and foreign partners regarding Ebola management.
The court directed that the suspension remains in place pending further hearings.
