Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga has called for the suspension of plans to establish a proposed Ebola treatment and isolation centre in neighbouring Laikipia County, urging the national government to first engage all relevant stakeholders.
In a statement on Saturday, Kahiga said residents of Nyeri had expressed concern over media reports indicating that the facility could be set up in Laikipia, a region closely linked to Nyeri through shared borders and strong social and economic ties.

He noted that any public health developments in Laikipia would directly affect Nyeri due to the movement of people, trade, transport, and family connections between the two counties.
While acknowledging that Ebola is a serious global health threat requiring preparedness and coordinated response, the governor emphasized the need for caution and proper consultation before implementing such a project.
Kahiga warned that the disease poses a high risk due to its severity and potential for cross-border spread, particularly along the Isiolo–Laikipia–Nyeri corridor.
He reiterated support for disease surveillance and preparedness efforts but stressed that such initiatives must be carried out transparently and with full public participation to gain community trust.
The governor insisted that residents, through their elected leaders, must be adequately briefed and involved in any decision regarding the establishment of the facility near their borders.
He urged the Ministry of Health to suspend the project until consultations are held and public engagement is undertaken.
Kahiga also called for the release of technical, environmental, and safety assessment reports related to the proposed centre, as well as detailed information on its objectives, funding, and long-term management plans.
Reports indicate that the proposed facility is linked to efforts involving the United States to manage Ebola cases.
