Wetang’ula’s Last Moments with Jirongo Revealed

National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula has shared an emotional account of his final encounter with former Lugari MP Cyrus Jirongo, only hours before Jirongo lost his life in a road accident.

Speaking during a visit to Jirongo’s home in Lumakanda, Lugari, Wetang’ula said he was deeply shaken to learn that his close friend had died shortly after the two shared a meal at a Nairobi hotel.

Wetang’ula said Jirongo had first contacted him on December 9 while he was in Uganda, requesting to see him. After returning to the country, the two eventually met on December 12, when Jirongo explained the reason for the meeting.

According to Wetang’ula, Jirongo wanted to comfort him following the death of his mother earlier in the year and also expressed sympathy as Wetang’ula continued to mourn his elder brother. Jirongo also apologised for missing the burial of Wetang’ula’s mother and promised to attend his brother’s funeral on December 18.

They parted ways at around 9pm, expecting to meet again later, but that never happened. Wetang’ula said he was stunned the next morning when he received news that Jirongo had been killed in a road crash.

He described Jirongo as a close personal friend whose death was a profound loss, noting that they had worked together for many years on various initiatives, including supporting children’s education.

Wetang’ula said Jirongo was passionate about unity, particularly within the Luhya community, and urged residents to honour his legacy by embracing peace and togetherness.

He noted that he had known Jirongo since 1988 and remembered him as a charismatic and generous leader who consistently advocated for unity.

Wetang’ula visited the family ahead of Jirongo’s burial, scheduled for December 30, 2025, at his home in Lumakanda, where he will be laid to rest beside his parents.

The Speaker was accompanied by several leaders, including Siaya Governor James Orengo, Roots Party leader George Wajackoyah and Lugari MP Nabii Nabwera. Security was heightened at the home as burial preparations continued.

Nabwera called on Luhya leaders to set aside their differences and unite in honour of Jirongo, confirming that funeral arrangements were complete, with Jirongo’s body expected at the home on the evening of December 29.
