Renowned Ugandan religious leader and entrepreneur Aloysius Bugingo has survived an assault by unidentified gunmen who fatally shot his bodyguard in the capital, Kampala.
The attackers fired upon Pastor Bugingo’s vehicle as he was heading home on Tuesday night in the Namungoona area. Subsequently, the assailants fled the scene on a motorcycle.
Despite sustaining injuries during the attack, Mr. Bugingo managed to drive the vehicle to a nearby hospital, according to the police.
Richard Muhumuza, the pastor’s bodyguard, succumbed to gunshot wounds, as reported by the police.
“We are thoroughly examining CCTV footage to identify the assailants,” stated the police, who also noted signs of tampering with the crime scene.
The police have labeled the incident as an attempted murder.
Pastor Bugingo, the founder of House of Prayer Ministries International, is a staunch supporter of Uganda’s ruling party.
The motive behind the attack remains unknown, though Uganda has recently witnessed a surge in unprecedented gun violence, resulting in the shooting deaths of several prominent individuals in Kampala.
