In Marsabit, a 30-year-old National Police Reservist named Lmalina Leado was killed after an elephant charged him while he was passing through Ndonyawas in Marsabit National Park. Leado, who was armed with a G3 rifle, was rushed to hospital but later died from his injuries. His weapon, still loaded with 40 rounds, was found beside him. Authorities, including police and Kenya Wildlife Service officers, have begun an investigation.

The second incident occurred in Narok County, where a 14-year-old boy was fatally attacked by an elephant at a watering point in Naroosura village while tending to cattle. He was taken to Narok Teaching and Referral Hospital but succumbed to his injuries.

These tragic events underline the ongoing conflict between wildlife and communities. In response, the government rolled out the third phase of the Human–Wildlife Conflict Compensation Programme in May 2025. Launched by President William Ruto at Meru National Park, the initiative aims to support victims and promote sustainable coexistence.

As part of the program, the Wildlife Conservation Card was introduced—a partnership with KCB Bank. Available in Platinum (Elephant), Gold (Lion), and Silver (Cheetah) tiers, the card channels a portion of each transaction (Sh10, Sh5, and Sh3 respectively) to the Wildlife Conservation Trust Fund.

President Ruto stressed the importance of proactive measures, stating, “Compensation is justice, but prevention is progress.” He highlighted that tools like the Conservation Card, strategic fencing, and community-based tourism can help transform conflict into opportunity.

This initiative encourages both Kenyans and global supporters to invest in conservation while also generating local economic benefits, aiming for a future where people and wildlife can live together more safely.
