In a press release dated June 9, 2025, Governor Wanga voiced deep concern over the unsettling circumstances surrounding Ojwang’s demise.

Ojwang, a teacher based in Voi, was arrested in Homa Bay town on Saturday for what authorities termed a “derogatory” post on X (formerly Twitter). He had been visiting relatives in the area when police apprehended him.

He was transported to Nairobi and detained at Central Police Station for interrogation. According to police, he died by suicide after allegedly injuring himself while alone in a cell.

“No family should endure such a painful loss under murky and disturbing circumstances—especially while their loved one is in the care of institutions tasked with safeguarding lives,” Wanga said.

She urged all relevant authorities to conduct a thorough, impartial, and transparent probe into the events that led to Ojwang’s death.

“There is no room for police brutality in our society,” she emphasized.

Wanga called on the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) to fast-track its investigation and ensure its findings are released to the public.

She also pledged her full support to Ojwang’s family, vowing to stand with them and offer necessary assistance during this difficult time.

The incident has reignited calls for stronger measures to ensure police accountability and the protection of individuals in custody.

Ojwang reportedly sustained severe head injuries believed to be self-inflicted. He was taken to hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

“He was rushed to hospital after an apparent suicide attempt. He had injured his head and unfortunately died at the hospital, not in custody,” said Nairobi Central Police Station boss Stephen Okal.

The body was taken to the mortuary awaiting postmortem examination.

The Law Society of Kenya had earlier demanded swift action from government security agencies, insisting on a prompt and transparent investigation and accountability for those responsible.

Amid growing public outcry, Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja ordered the suspension of several senior officers at Central Police Station on Sunday night.
