The Ministry of Tourism and Wildlife has released KSh 52,631,000 in compensation to 26 individuals in Kitui County affected by human-wildlife conflict (HWC).

The cheque handover ceremony took place in Mutomo during the 2025 International Day for Biological Diversity, which carried the theme “Harmony with Nature and Sustainable Development.”
Representing Tourism and Wildlife Cabinet Secretary, Dr. Shadrack Ngene, the Wildlife Secretary, officially presented the symbolic cheque. The funds are intended to compensate victims for injuries, fatalities, and property damage caused by wildlife.
Dr. Ngene reaffirmed the Ministry’s dedication to addressing human-wildlife conflict through both compensation and preventive initiatives. He stressed the crucial role of communities in conserving biodiversity and reiterated the government’s commitment to supporting them.
Kitui Deputy Governor Augustine Kanani, area MP Dr. Nyamai, MCAs, County Commissioner, and other senior officials attended the event alongside community members and conservation stakeholders.
Deputy Governor Kanani lauded the government’s effort, stating that the compensation not only delivers justice to affected families but also strengthens the collective mission for peaceful coexistence with nature.
The biodiversity day celebration also served as an opportunity to promote awareness about conservation and the importance of collaborative efforts in resolving HWC.
The Ministry pledged to continue partnering with county governments and other stakeholders to build community resilience, protect habitats, and implement early intervention measures to minimize conflict and support coexistence.
