Asked about a New York Times report that he had prevented an Israeli attack on Iran, Trump said: “I wouldn’t say prevent. I’m in no rush to do that because I think Iran has the opportunity to be a better country.”

But then he added, “I’m in no rush to do that,” indicating some degree of confirmation of the report, which said Israel wanted to go ahead with a major joint strike with the United States against Iran’s nuclear facilities next month but Trump chose diplomacy.

“Iran has the opportunity to become a better country, and live happily without deaths, and I would like to see this happen,” the President explained while speaking to reporters at the White House alongside Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.

“That’s my first choice.”

“If there is a second option, I think the situation will be very bad for Iran, and I don’t think Iran wants to talk. It will be very good for them if they do. Iran cannot have a nuclear weapon. That’s all,” he added.

Trump boasts that he withdrew the United States from the 2015 Iran nuclear deal.
