Another 39 people were rescued after the ship, the Sindbad, sank at around 10:00 local time (08:00 GMT), officials said. Nine are said to be injured, with four in serious condition.

Two of the dead were children, the Russian news agency Tass reported, citing a Russian official.

Authorities are still investigating and it is not yet known what caused the incident.

This is the second incident involving a cruise ship in the Red Sea in recent months. In November, a boat capsized near Marsa Allam, leaving 11 people missing and presumed dead.

Sindbad has been operating as a tourist submarine for several years.

Sindbad Submarines, the company that operates the trips, says its vessels take passengers on a trip to explore coral reefs off the coast of Hurghada.

The Red Sea Governor, Amr Hanafy, said the 45 passengers on the Sindbad were from Russia, India, Norway and Sweden. Five Egyptian crew members were also on board.

Mr. Hanafy said the six dead were all Russians, but full details of the victims have not yet been released.

An investigation into the incident is ongoing, but the Russian Association of Tour Operators quoted a Telegram post saying the submarine hit a rock and eventually lost propulsion at a depth of 20 meters (65 feet).
