The event, held at Jumia’s Nairobi facility, offered valuable insights into e-commerce operations, logistics, and cashless transactions, among other opportunities for micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) to grow.
Participants also toured Jumia’s warehouse, gaining firsthand experience in inventory management, order fulfillment, and last-mile delivery. This demonstration highlighted how e-commerce platforms can improve efficiency and market access.
Kenya ranks as Africa’s third-largest e-commerce market, fueled by increasing internet access, a tech-savvy youth demographic, and mobile adoption rates surpassing 40%.
Vinod Goel, Jumia’s Regional CEO for East Africa, emphasized three key components for e-commerce success: seamless information flow via digital platforms, effective logistics for on-time delivery, and secure cashless payment methods. He encouraged SMEs to embrace these elements to improve visibility, streamline operations, and boost sales.
“By adopting e-commerce, SMEs can broaden their market reach, enhance efficiency, and foster sustainable growth,” Goel stated.
As the third-largest e-commerce market in Africa, Kenya offers SMEs a prime opportunity to expand via online platforms. However, challenges such as limited market access, lack of marketing skills, and financial constraints often slow their progress.
The World Bank’s 2018 Enterprise Survey highlights these obstacles and calls for training and digital adoption.
Mary Ngechu, KEPSA Board Director for SMEs and Startups, emphasized the importance of utilizing Jumia’s ecosystem for growth. She highlighted Jumia’s marketing and logistics support and encouraged businesses to take advantage of the Jiinue Growth Program for affordable financing.
“The benchmarking tour highlighted how e-commerce can transform SMEs. By partnering with industry leaders like Jumia, KEPSA is helping entrepreneurs access practical tools and insights to thrive in the digital economy, promoting long-term business sustainability,” she said.
