IEBC Chairperson and Commissioner Interviews Begins Today

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Selection Panel is set to interview candidates for the position of chairperson and six commissioner roles.

This 33-day public process, starting today Monday, aims to fully constitute the electoral body.

Dr. Nelson Makanda and his team will oversee the highly anticipated reconstitution at the College of Insurance in Nairobi.

The interviews will occur in stages, with the first phase involving 11 candidates vying to succeed the late chairperson, Wafula Chebukati. These interviews will take place from March 24 to March 26.

Today, the first group of candidates will be interviewed, including former Constitutional Implementation Committee Chairperson Charles Nyachae, former Chief Registrar of the Judiciary Anne Amadi, Abdulqadir Lorot Ramadhan, and Edward Katama Ngeywa.

On Tuesday, Erastus Edung Ethekon, Francis Kakai Kissinger, former Nairobi County Assembly Clerk Jacob Ngwele, and Joy Masinde-Mdivo, the current chairperson of the Kenya Power board, will be interviewed.

The final day of chairperson interviews will feature Lillian Wanjiku Manegene, Robert Akumu Asembo, and Saul Simiyu Wasilwa.

After the chairperson interviews, an additional 105 candidates for the six commissioner positions will be interviewed from March 26 to April 24.

This extensive process seeks to form a team that will manage upcoming by-elections and ultimately oversee the 2027 General Elections.

The IEBC has been without a full commission since the retirement of Chebukati and former commissioners Abdi Yakub Guliye and Boya Molu. The new appointments will mark the first complete reconstitution of the commission since 2022.

Key tasks for the new commission will include addressing electoral integrity concerns and conducting a thorough cleanup of the voter register, which has been a topic of public debate recently.
