IEBC CEO Marjan Hussein Resigns

Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Chief Executive Officer Marjan Hussein Marjan has resigned from his post.

In a statement issued on Tuesday evening, IEBC Chairperson Erastus Ethekon said the departure followed a mutual agreement to end Marjan’s engagement with the Commission.

The move brings his tenure to a close and sets in motion the recruitment of a new CEO and Commission Secretary. Ethekon said the IEBC will, in the meantime, name an acting CEO/Secretary to ensure continuity.

He noted that the leadership change underscores the Commission’s commitment to a smooth transition as it continues to execute its constitutional responsibilities, including the conduct of elections and the delimitation of electoral boundaries.

Ethekon added that the changes within the Secretariat are part of broader reforms aimed at boosting institutional readiness, accountability, and performance. He said the Secretariat plays a key role in delivering credible, free, and fair elections, and that the reforms are intended to improve efficiency, transparency, and service delivery to Kenyans.

The Chairperson also thanked Marjan for his service since his appointment in March 2022, highlighting his role in steering the Commission during a period when it operated without a fully constituted team of Commissioners until July 2025.

“We appreciate Mr. Marjan’s dedication and professionalism and wish him success in his future endeavors,” Ethekon said.

Marjan’s exit comes amid sustained pressure from opposition parties calling for his removal ahead of the next General Election.

Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka had accused him of hurriedly extending the contract of Smartmatic, the supplier of election technology used in the 2022 polls, warning that his continued stay in office could compromise the credibility of future elections.
