The incident was reported to Kamakwa Police Station on the morning of Wednesday, June 11, 2025, by the area sub-chief. According to police, Wangui’s husband said she left the house at around 6 a.m. while he was still asleep.
Her body was later found near a maize field within their homestead, hanging from a rafter using a lesso.
A suicide note was discovered tucked inside a Bible in their living room, in which Wangui mentioned the debt as the reason for her actions. Her husband told police he had no knowledge of the debt.
The scene was documented by officers, and her body was transferred to the Nyeri County and Referral Hospital Mortuary.
This case is among five suicide incidents reported across the country in the same week, prompting a series of investigations in Nyeri, Kisii, Meru, and Nairobi counties.
In a related case in Kiiru Village, Kisii County, 40-year-old Samwel Nyambane Onyinkwa was found dead by his young son on Wednesday morning. The report was made by Onyinkwa’s brother after hearing the child’s cries.
Police said Onyinkwa had dinner with his two sons the previous evening before they went to bed. His wife was reportedly away visiting relatives. The next morning, one of the children discovered his father’s body hanging from a mosquito net inside their home.
No physical injuries were observed on Onyinkwa’s body, which was taken to the Gucha Sub-County Hospital Morgue for a postmortem.
