Bristol City, a Championship side, defeated West Ham 1-0 on Tuesday, ending the Hammers’ FA Cup campaign and extending their 44-year wait to lift the trophy.
Tommy Conway secured the victory for Bristol City at Ashton Gate with the only goal of the match, capitalizing on a short back pass from Konstantinos Mavropanos to round Lukasz Fabianski and slot the ball into an unguarded net. Conway expressed his joy at getting the winning goal and praised the supportive crowd.
West Ham, missing key players like Jarrod Bowen, Lucas Paqueta, and Mohammed Kudus, who was away at the Africa Cup of Nations, played almost the entire second half with a man down after Said Benrahma was sent off for kicking out at Joe Williams. Despite a late effort from Tomas Soucek, Bristol City secured the win and will face either Blackpool or Nottingham Forest in the fourth round.
In another FA Cup match, League Two Newport defeated non-league Eastleigh 3-1, earning the opportunity to host Manchester United in the fourth round on January 28. Brentford suffered a 3-2 loss to Wolves in extra time, with Wolves’ Matheus Cunha sealing the victory with a penalty.
Birmingham and Luton also secured victories, coming from behind to beat Hull 2-1 and progressing with a 2-1 win over League One Bolton, respectively.
