A 27-year-old man was swept away by floodwaters while attempting to cross River Thiba in Mwea West, Kirinyaga County.
Witnesses reported that he was trying to cross from Ngurubani town to Gakungu village when the strong currents carried him away.
The community is urging the government to expedite the construction of a bridge to prevent similar tragedies during periods of flooding.
Following the breach of Thiba River on April 3, over 700 residents from three villages in Mwea have been displaced, with extensive damage to property and farmlands in the Mwea irrigation scheme. The situation is described as unprecedented, and with forecasts predicting heavy rains for the next four days, residents are in urgent need of humanitarian aid.
In response to the crisis, Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru has initiated emergency measures to address flood-related issues and other emergencies caused by the heavy rains. She has also issued a warning to residents near Thiba Dam and downstream areas to stay vigilant due to the rapid rise in water levels, which raises concerns about potential dam breaches.
The ongoing heavy rains have resulted in over 83 fatalities across the country, underscoring the severity of the situation.
