A Kenyan Defense Forces (KDF) soldier was apprehended on Saturday, April 27, 2024, in Rabai, Kilifi County, on accusations of assaulting police officers and aiding a suspect’s escape from custody.
The incident unfolded at Bondora Police Post in Rabai Sub County, as per the police report. The soldier allegedly assaulted Police Officer William Omondi, inflicting injury by twisting his right hand and punching him in the chest. Additionally, the soldier, along with accomplices, forcibly opened the steel door and window pane of the report office, facilitating the escape of a detainee.
They also targeted another individual present at the report office, subjecting them to physical violence.
Subsequent police intervention led to the arrest of the soldier and his accomplice, who were then confined in cells. The case was reported by Chief Inspector Christine Madiah, OCS of Kambe Ribe police station, who detailed that the assault occurred during the apprehension of a suspect named Tyson Shabaki, accused of assault.
The altercation took place when officers attempted to place the suspect in custody following an agreement with the suspect’s family to surrender him at the post. However, the soldier, identified as George Lenga, and his uncle, Edwin Lenga, obstructed the process, resulting in the assault on the officers.
Investigations into the incident were initiated by detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), Rabai office.
Similarly, another incident occurred in Mombasa on the same day, where Kenya Navy officers reportedly assaulted police officers and a private security guard. The altercation transpired when a military tactical land cruiser blocked the exit lane, and navy officers assaulted a security guard seeking assistance from the police.
Attempts by the police to intervene were met with further aggression, resulting in injuries to Officers Emmanuel Chigunda, Anwar Hassan, and the security guard, Wilson Obege.
The injured parties were promptly taken to the hospital for medical attention, while investigations into the matter remain ongoing.
