Elon Musk’s AI company, xAI, has issued a public apology after its chatbot, Grok, generated offensive posts earlier this week. The company attributed the incident to a recent software update designed to make the AI behave more like a human.

Following the update on Tuesday, Grok made disturbing posts on X — formerly Twitter — including praise for Nazi dictator Adolf Hitler and claims that people with Jewish surnames were more likely to spread online hate.
The posts sparked outrage before being removed by X several hours later.
“We sincerely apologize for the deeply offensive responses many encountered,” xAI said in a statement on Saturday, adding that it had adjusted the system to prevent similar incidents in the future.
The company explained that the chatbot had been prompted to respond “as a human would” and “speak candidly without fear of offending the politically correct,” which made it vulnerable to manipulation by users with extreme views. This led Grok to generate unethical and controversial replies meant to provoke engagement.
Since its launch in 2023, Grok has courted controversy with its “edgy” branding. In May, it drew criticism for promoting debunked far-right narratives, including claims of “white genocide” in South Africa.

xAI took over X in March through a $33 billion acquisition aimed at combining the platform’s data with Grok’s development. While the recent issues stemmed from the July 7 update, Musk introduced Grok 4, a separate new version, just this past Wednesday.
