Winnie Odinga Signals Return to Local Politics

East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) MP Winnie Odinga has signaled her intention to rejoin local politics following the passing of her father, former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.

Speaking during Raila’s final funeral service at the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology in Siaya on Sunday, Winnie expressed her appreciation to President William Ruto for supporting the family during their time of grief.

“Your Excellency, our people thank you for honouring our father and standing with us. And just so you know, I’m ready to come back home,” she said, turning to the President — a remark that drew attention and smiles from those present.

President Ruto, seated beside Mama Ida Odinga, was seen smiling in response to her statement.

Raila had in recent months developed a cooperative working relationship with President Ruto through a government unity arrangement, a move that eased political tensions between their camps. Ruto had also backed Raila’s bid for the African Union Commission chairmanship, which he lost earlier this year.

Analysts have described Raila’s death as a setback for President Ruto, who had relied on the veteran opposition leader to help stabilize the country following last year’s Gen Z-led protests.

Winnie thanked all leaders and citizens who stood with the family during their mourning period, promising to return to personally express her gratitude. She closed her remarks with her signature line,

“The king is dead, but long live the crown,” before raising her fist and adding, “God bless the republic, God bless Baba’s legacy.”

Winnie Odinga began her regional political career in late 2022 after being elected to represent Kenya in the East African Legislative Assembly. Her term, which began on December 19, 2022, runs through 2027.

Since her father’s passing in India due to cardiac arrest, Winnie has remained a symbol of strength and composure, often seen comforting others even as the nation mourned.

Many observers see her as a potential successor to Raila’s political mantle, though they acknowledge that the space he occupied in Kenya’s politics is enormous and difficult to fill.

Raila Odinga will be laid to rest on Sunday at the family’s Kang’o Kajaramogi home, closing a monumental chapter in Kenya’s political history.
