National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) Chairperson Samuel Kobia has announced the commission’s intention to urge Parliament to rename certain counties associated with particular ethnic groups, aiming to mitigate potential ethnic discrimination.
Kobia specified ten counties, including Meru, Tharaka Nithi, Nandi, Kisii, Turkana, Embu, Samburu, Taita Taveta, West Pokot, and Elgeyo Marakwet, for potential renaming.
Speaking during a press briefing on Monday regarding peace and cohesion in Kenya, Kobia emphasized that land and boundary disputes persist as significant sources of conflict in the country.
Renaming counties is presented as one strategy to address these boundary conflicts, with Kobia noting that 33 out of 47 counties are embroiled in such disputes, often translating into ethnic tensions due to the ethnic delineation of many counties.
Kobia reiterated the commission’s dedication to fostering peace in Kenya, highlighting ongoing efforts such as facilitating dialogues and reconciliation meetings among communities in conflict.
He emphasized the commitment to preserving Kenya’s peaceful coexistence and consolidating the progress achieved over the years.
