President William Ruto is currently in discussions with senior security officials to address the worsening security situation in the North Rift region.
Interior Cabinet Secretary Kindiki Kithure is leading the delegation, accompanied by Inspector General of Police Japhet Koome and his deputies, Douglas Kanja and Noor Gabow. Also present are Principal Secretary Raymond Omolo and other high-ranking security officials, convening at Ruto’s residence in Kilgoris.
The meeting aims to confront the ongoing violence perpetrated by bandits in the area, which has persisted despite the presence of multiple security teams.
In recent months, numerous fatalities have occurred, and many individuals have been displaced as a result of attacks by these bandits. Local leaders report that over 70 people have lost their lives in separate incidents.
This gathering, convened by the head of state, occurs as part of a renewed government strategy to combat the long-standing issue of banditry in the region.
Recently, Kindiki oversaw the deployment of modern security equipment, including Armoured Personnel Carriers (APCs), Mine Resistant Ambush Protected Vehicles (MRAPs), and Armoured Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs).
Operation Maliza Uhalifu was initiated in February 2023 to address the persistent violent activities of bandits in the North Rift. Led by police forces and supported by the military, this operation involves a multi-agency security team, including National Police Reservists serving as supplementary forces within their communities.
