Mourners attending tiktoker Brian Chira's burial ceremony at the family home in Gathanje, Githunguri in Kiambu County on March 26,2024.

Village Elders Conduct Cleansing Ritual at Brian Chira’s Home

Elders from the village conducted a purification ceremony at the family home of Brian Chira, the late TikToker, in Gathanje Village, Githunguri sub-County, Kiambu County.

Clad in traditional Agikuyu attire, they explained that the ceremony was prompted by concerns raised by both family members and neighbors regarding the behavior of numerous young attendees at Chira’s funeral.

The elders deemed the actions witnessed during the burial on March 26, 2024, as deeply inappropriate, considering them taboo. They believed that conducting the rituals was essential to dispel any lingering negative energy from the event. Expressing their dismay, one elder highlighted the disrespectful behavior exhibited by the mourners, including inappropriate dressing, smoking, alcohol consumption in public, and disregard for religious figures. Such conduct, they lamented, contradicted the values of the Kikuyu traditions and was unprecedented in their community. Concerns were voiced about the broader societal trend of youth abandoning cultural and religious practices.

The elders emphasized the need for the younger generation to reconnect with their heritage and expressed apprehension about the implications of their current lifestyle choices, particularly in terms of raising future generations. They called upon the community to participate in the cleansing ceremony to purify the surroundings and expel any lingering negative influences.
