Belgut Member of Parliament (MP) Nelson Koech believes that Raila Odinga’s potential departure from national politics will significantly impact the strength of the opposition. Odinga recently announced his intention to vie for the position of Chairperson of the African Union Commission (AUC).
According to Koech, Odinga has long been the driving force behind a vibrant and proactive opposition that has consistently held the government accountable. His absence, Koech suggests, could dampen the political vigor.
“Raila Odinga embodies the opposition, and without him, its influence is greatly diminished,” Koech remarked during an interview with Citizen TV.
The MP acknowledged Odinga’s pivotal role not only in shaping the country’s politics but also in championing democracy and national development.
Nevertheless, Koech assured that the government is prepared to throw its support behind Odinga’s aspirations.
“In the history of our nation, few political figures have endured as long as Raila Odinga. He has contributed significantly to our democracy and national discourse. We wish him the best,” Koech added.
Odinga has expressed his determination to revolutionize Africa and elevate it to an economic powerhouse, emphasizing the need for collective efforts to drive socio-economic growth across the continent.
Former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo has already pledged his support for Odinga’s candidacy, highlighting the importance of endorsements from African leaders in securing the prestigious position.
The Chairperson position of the AUC is set to become vacant next year, with Chad’s Moussa Faki concluding his second term in office. Despite Odinga’s potential exit from the Kenyan political scene, the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya coalition party maintains its commitment to remaining a formidable political force.
