Police have launched investigations after a human skeleton, believed to have been scavenged by hyenas, was discovered in Kamulu, deepening concerns over a series of unexplained deaths reported in parts of Machakos County.
The remains were found on Monday at around 4:27 p.m. in Athi View village, Kamulu, within Athi River Sub-county, after a local administrator alerted officers at Kamulu Police Post.

Investigators believe the remains belong to an adult whose body may have been dragged away and consumed by hyenas before only the skeleton was left behind.
One of the officers at the scene said the advanced state of decomposition made it impossible to immediately determine the victim’s gender.
“The hyenas had eaten all the flesh, leaving only the skull and bones. At this stage, it’s difficult to establish whether the remains belong to a man or a woman,” the officer said.
Police documented the scene before transferring the skeletal remains to the Nairobi City Mortuary, where further investigations are expected to help establish the victim’s identity and cause of death.
The discovery comes just a day after another body was found abandoned along the Tala–Kinyui Road in Sengai, Matungulu Sub-county.
Residents identified the deceased as a local quarry worker. Officers visited the scene and moved the body to a mortuary for preservation and further examination.
A local administrator said preliminary investigations suggest the victim may have been killed elsewhere before the body was dumped at the location.
“We suspect he was murdered in another place because the body was not at the scene earlier in the day,” the administrator said, while urging residents to remain vigilant amid an increase in body-dumping incidents across Machakos County.
In another incident reported in Mlolongo, also within Athi River Sub-county, police recovered the body of a man by the roadside near Cooperative Bank on Friday. Authorities said the deceased had visible injuries, and the body was taken to a mortuary pending investigations.
Meanwhile, detectives are also investigating the death of 22-year-old Daniel Mwongela Muasya, whose body was found inside an iron-sheet structure in the Slota area on Thursday.

Police said officers discovered the body with bruises on the lips after receiving a report from a local administrator.
According to investigators, the deceased’s father, Darlington Muasya Kyangulu, told police he last saw his son on June 24 at around 5 p.m. at their rented home in Slota, where he appeared to be in good health.
Daniel’s body was taken to Shallom Community Hospital Mortuary, where a post-mortem examination will be conducted to establish the exact cause of death.
Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) in Athi River are handling investigations into all the reported incidents.
