Big Win for Motorists as Ruto Announces New Highway

President William Ruto has announced a Sh30 billion project to dual the Muthaiga–Kiambu Road and its connecting bypasses as part of the government’s strategy to improve transport infrastructure and spur economic growth along the fast-growing Kiambu corridor.

Speaking on Monday during the commissioning of the Ngong Road–Naivasha Road Flyover, the President said the 23-kilometre road expansion is expected to significantly improve movement between Nairobi and the northern metropolitan region.

Ruto said the project will ease traffic congestion, enhance connectivity and support the increasing demand for housing, commercial developments and other investments within the corridor.

He noted that the upgraded road network will facilitate faster movement of people and goods while opening up Nairobi’s northern outskirts to greater economic opportunities and urban development.

The President added that the project is expected to eliminate long-standing traffic bottlenecks that have slowed Nairobi’s expansion and hindered economic activity for many years.

In addition, Ruto announced a Sh44.9 billion investment in Nairobi’s Intelligent Transport System (ITS), describing it as one of Africa’s largest smart mobility initiatives.

The project will be rolled out in three phases to modernise traffic management, reduce congestion and improve transport efficiency across Nairobi and its satellite towns.

The first phase, valued at Sh7.9 billion, will see intelligent traffic systems installed at 25 signalised junctions together with the establishment of a state-of-the-art traffic management centre.

The second phase will expand the system to 60 junctions at a cost of Sh13 billion, while the final phase, estimated at Sh24 billion, will extend the technology to an additional 125 junctions.

Once completed, more than 210 junctions across Nairobi will operate under a coordinated real-time traffic management system aimed at improving road safety, easing congestion and reducing travel times.

Ruto said the initiative is modelled on globally recognised smart transport systems and forms part of the Nairobi Urban Regeneration Programme, which he described as Kenya’s most ambitious urban mobility project.

The President said the government’s vision extends beyond constructing highways, emphasizing that improved transport infrastructure is key to boosting connectivity, trade, investment and job creation.

The latest announcement forms part of the Kenya Kwanza administration’s 10-year infrastructure programme, which targets the dualling of 2,500 kilometres of highways and the tarmacking of 28,000 kilometres of roads nationwide.

Among the administration’s flagship road projects are the ongoing dualling of the 170-kilometre Rironi–Mau Summit Highway and the 58-kilometre Rironi–Maai Mahiu–Naivasha Road, both aimed at reducing congestion and supporting economic growth along major transport corridors.
