University of Nairobi students and faculty members who utilize university kitchens for meals will now need to conduct their payments through the e-Citizen platform, as per a directive from the Kenyan government.
The directive mandates that all financial transactions with the institution be processed via the government’s online portal. A memo circulated by the university’s administration office outlines the procedures for making payments in compliance with this directive.
According to the memo accessed by Citizen Digital, clients are instructed to utilize the designated paybill number 222222 for their transactions. After initiating the payment, users are required to input the Outlet/Live identifier in uppercase letters, followed by a hyphen and the specific name (e.g., NUK1-name) as the account number.
Detailed payment instructions, including Outlet/Live Identifiers for various kitchen facilities, were provided by the university. This directive applies to the kitchens situated across the main campus and satellite campuses within Nairobi.
These directives align with the government’s recent transition of all its services to the e-Citizen platform. The move, completed a month ago, necessitates individuals seeking government services to make payments through this digital portal.

Treasury and Economic Planning Cabinet Secretary Njuguna Ndung’u had previously announced the introduction of access fees for government services on the e-Citizen platform, as per a gazette notice issued in December 2023.
The administrative fee structure for accessing services on the e-Citizen platform is as follows:
- Below Ksh. 199: Ksh. 5
- Between Ksh. 200 – Ksh. 299: Ksh. 10
- Between Ksh. 300 – Ksh. 499: Ksh. 15
- Between Ksh. 500 – Ksh. 699: Ksh. 20
- Between Ksh. 700 – Ksh. 999: Ksh. 25
- Over Ksh. 1000: Ksh. 50
For transactions involving amounts in foreign currencies, the conversion rate of US dollars to Kenyan shillings will be applied.
