On January 22, the police arrested two Nigerian individuals in Ndenderu, Kiambu County, in connection to the murder of Rita Waeni in Roysambu, Nairobi.
The arrest yielded the recovery of a hatchet, a butcher knife, and six mobile phones from the suspects’ residence.
William Oyie Opia and Johnbull Asibor, the two Nigerians, were apprehended while in possession of items linking them to the murder and other criminal activities, according to the police report.

The High Court granted the police permission to detain the two suspects for eight days to facilitate ongoing investigations. This decision followed an application filed by the investigating agency, seeking an eight-day period to conclude their inquiries.
Preliminary investigations revealed that William Ovie Opia had purchased the hatchet from an online vendor.
This development comes after the discovery of Rita Waeni’s body parts in a bag along TRM Drive, off Thika Road, Nairobi, on January 14.
Officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) initiated investigations into the murder upon visiting the crime scene.
On January 17, Rita Waeni’s family disclosed that the perpetrators had demanded a ransom of Ksh500,000. The family reported the matter to the police and the DCI after receiving a message on January 14, delivered from Waeni’s phone number, demanding the ransom within 24 hours for her release.
Despite additional ransom demands, the family did not receive further details or an opportunity to explore this route. Rita Waeni, a 20-year-old student, was set to enter her fourth and final year at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT).
