Eight Dead in Tana River Tribal Clashes

Tension High as Eight Killed in Latest Tana River Tribal Clashes

Tension continues to escalate in several villages of the Bangale sub-county in Tana River after renewed inter-clan violence over land disputes has resulted in the deaths of eight people.

The clashes, which began last week, have spread across multiple villages, with armed groups employing firearms, bows, and arrows, making it difficult for security forces to manage the situation.

Four fatalities occurred in Nanighi, two at KBC grounds, and two in the Anole area over the course of Thursday, Friday, and Saturday.

The violence initially erupted at a watering point in Anole between two communities, leading to the shooting deaths of 75-year-old Said Maliu and 35-year-old Juma Mohammed.

The conflict then spread to the KBC area, where a village elder, 58-year-old Daud Shora, was shot multiple times and died instantly.

Bangale Police Commander Ephraim Karani confirmed the incidents and assured the affected families that justice would be pursued.

He noted that tensions flared on Friday as the communities clashed over the land issue.

“We acted quickly and deployed sufficient security personnel to restore order,” he said.

Karanja mentioned that the situation could have worsened without the prompt intervention of law enforcement in Anole, where they safeguarded schoolchildren and teachers from a potential retaliatory attack.

He added that police are aware of individuals with illegal firearms and that arrests are imminent.

As police increase patrols, tensions remain high in the affected villages.

In a related incident, chaos erupted at the Madogo police station on Friday when members of one community demanded the immediate arrest of those responsible for the killings in Anole and KBC.

Residents are now calling for the arrest of individuals with illegal firearms and have accused some politicians of inciting violence between the communities.
