Tensions are running high at Eldoret National Polytechnic following the fatal stabbing of a male student by unknown assailants on Sunday night, sparking outrage among students and leading to a heavy police presence.
The 19-year-old student was attacked around 8 p.m. while walking from the college to his rented residence in Cherunya, located about two kilometers away.
Dr. Charles Koech, the college principal, confirmed the incident and stated that detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) are handling the case.
“We are working closely with student leaders and security officials to manage the situation. This is a tragic loss, and we are urging students to remain calm as investigations proceed,” Koech said.
The area, which has a large student population, is now the center of a murder investigation.
Uasin Gishu County Police Commander Benjamin Mwanthi confirmed the death, stating that the student succumbed to stab wounds at the scene. He also mentioned that the attackers had stolen personal belongings from the victim.
“We are following all leads to apprehend those responsible. They will face justice,” Mwanthi assured.
In response to rising anger among students and threats of protests, heavily armed police officers have been deployed to the campus and surrounding areas to maintain peace.
“We ask students to stay calm and let the investigations unfold. Protests will only escalate the situation,” Mwanthi added.
The killing has left the student body in shock, with many expressing concerns over safety around the campus and nearby areas.
With a student population exceeding 18,000, most of whom live in private hostels near the campus, security measures have been heightened both on the campus and in surrounding residential areas as the investigation continues.
