Sonko Announces Political Comeback After Registering New Party

Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has declared that he is gearing up for a political return after registering his new outfit, the National Economic Development Party (NEDP).

Although his impeachment currently bars him from seeking public office, Sonko said he plans to return to the Supreme Court to request a review of the ruling that upheld his removal from office.

Sonko was impeached by Nairobi MCAs in December 2020 and challenged the decision from the High Court all the way to the Supreme Court, which upheld the impeachment. He later appealed to the East African Court of Justice, which ruled in his favour, stating the process had been unlawful. He now intends to use that outcome—and new evidence—to seek a fresh review in Kenya.

He said the Constitution allows anyone accused or removed from office to contest elections unless all avenues for appeal or review have been fully exhausted.

“I have new evidence, including affidavits from some MCAs admitting they were pressured to impeach me,” Sonko said outside the Registrar of Political Parties offices. He argued this strengthens his case for a review.

Sonko claimed the Supreme Court decision ended his political career “in just 24 hours,” but insisted Article 193 keeps him eligible because he still has a pending review.

He added that the NEDP will prioritise young leaders across the country. “This is not about Sonko; it’s about ordinary Kenyans,” he said, announcing upcoming recruitment drives before a formal party launch.

Sonko — a former Makadara MP, Nairobi Senator, and Governor — is listed as NEDP party leader. His deputies are former SONU chair Anthony Manyara and KEMU student leader Naomi Chebet Masai. Other officials include John Nyamu (chairman), Ben Mulwa (secretary general), Eric Njoroge (deputy SG), Francis Wambua (treasurer), Laura Mwende (deputy treasurer), Peterson Maina (national organising secretary), and Joseph Kiangoi (deputy organising secretary).

Masai said the party aims to put youth at the centre of leadership, adding: “We will no longer just sit at the table — we will be the ones preparing the menu.”
