Nairobi residents have raised concerns about escalating cases of mugging, theft, and assault within the Central Business District (CBD).
Social media users have been sharing accounts of being drugged, robbed, or attacked, particularly during evening hours. Victims report that criminals often snatch phones, bags, and other valuables, sometimes brandishing knives to threaten their targets.
“Cases of phones being stolen in town have become rampant, even in matatus or while alighting. People need to be extra careful,” one user warned in a viral video.
Others advised Kenyans to raise alarm when confronted by thieves and urged residents to look out for each other.
Several hotspots have been identified, especially dimly lit and less populated streets. One resident recalled being followed on Kimathi Street, noting, “I’m no longer going to town at night after that experience.”
Another cautioned against walking in the CBD past 7 pm, claiming gangs have been preying on unsuspecting pedestrians in recent weeks.
In response, Nairobi County Chief Officer for Environment Geoffrey Mosiria acknowledged the reports, saying criminals — sometimes posing as Gen Z content creators — operate in large groups and begin targeting residents from around 5 pm.
He added that some street families are also involved in illegal activities such as night-time robberies, waste dumping, and extortion, sometimes even using human waste to intimidate victims.

Mosiria assured residents that joint enforcement operations with the National Police Service are ongoing to restore safety and cleanliness in the CBD. He urged the public to report incidents or suspicious activity, emphasizing that keeping the city safe requires collective vigilance and responsibility.
