The South Korean nationals, who were in Kenya for a real estate project in the Sabaki area and had also offered to support solar-powered water pumping, reportedly entrusted their gold to a senior officer stationed at a highly secure police facility along Mombasa Road in Athi River, Machakos County, in March 2025.

According to a police report filed at Mlolongo Police Station under OB No: 75/9/5/2025, the investors approached the officer requesting safekeeping of the precious metal. The officer allegedly stored the gold in a secure steel armoury box, which was managed by another officer at the station, an inspector.

However, as the April Easter holidays approached, the senior officer asked to verify the gold’s presence. When the box was opened, instead of the original items, they found a metal that resembled gold but was not what had initially been stored.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) from Mlolongo Police Station visited the scene but were unable to recover the missing gold. Investigations into the disappearance are ongoing.

Speaking to The Star, a local newspaper, the senior officer confirmed the investors had indeed requested him to store the gold and stated that the matter had already been reported to both the police station and the DCI.

“Yes, it’s true. We kept the gold at the foreign investors’ request. I’ve reported the matter to Mlolongo Police Station, and DCI officers have launched investigations,” he said.
