Senator Cheruiyot: I was Almost Resigning Due to Protests

Senator Aaron Cheruiyot considered resigning due to the heightened tensions during the anti-Finance Bill protests.

Speaking in the Senate, Cheruiyot admitted that there were moments when he thought about stepping down from his leadership role.

However, he ultimately decided against it, emphasizing his commitment to being part of the solution to Kenya’s challenges.

“I must admit, Mr. Speaker, that there were nights when I seriously considered resigning, thinking maybe others could take over. But now is not the time to quit because quitting doesn’t solve problems or lift us out of the difficulties we’re facing,” he remarked.

Cheruiyot stressed the importance of leaders addressing the country’s problems rather than shirking their responsibilities. He apologized to Kenyans for contributing to the current state of affairs and expressed deep reflection on his role and actions.

“I have spent the past few days soul-searching, reflecting on my journey, and trying to empathize with ordinary citizens and their sentiments towards me. I’ve questioned myself on what I could have done better,” he stated.

He also acknowledged the criticism from young protesters, saying, “We are ashamed that it took young children to point out that our leaders are naked.”

Cheruiyot highlighted the need for unconventional solutions during these unprecedented times, suggesting that traditional approaches may no longer suffice.

Meanwhile, Senate Speaker Amason Kingi urged the police to show restraint towards peaceful protesters and called for the release of those arrested in connection with the demonstrations.

He also called on the government to cover medical bills and funeral costs for those affected by the protests, and urged the judiciary to prioritize cases related to the Finance Bill.
