Festive Season Turns Deadly as NTSA Flags 1,702 Violations

The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has raised concern over a surge in deadly road accidents as travel increases during the festive season.

According to the authority, fatal crashes have been recorded in several counties, including Kakamega, Bungoma, Nakuru, Nyeri, Siaya, Kiambu, Nairobi, Machakos, Narok, Kisii, Turkana and Uasin Gishu.

On December 23, 2025, NTSA reported 16 road crashes in a single day, which claimed 25 lives. The majority of those killed were pedestrians and passengers. The fatalities included eight pedestrians, eight passengers, five motorcyclists, three pillion riders and one driver.

NTSA conveyed its condolences to affected families and wished those injured a quick recovery, stressing that road safety remains a key priority during the holiday period.

The authority said it has stepped up enforcement and deployed all available resources to curb accidents. In the past four days, joint operations involving multiple agencies uncovered 1,702 traffic offences across commercial, public service and private vehicles.

Key violations cited were faulty or missing speed limiters, driving under the influence of alcohol, use of unroadworthy vehicles, overloading, lack of valid insurance or vehicle tax, and operating without a Road Service Licence. As a result, 42 drivers were arrested and 418 vehicles declared non-compliant.

NTSA cautioned that the festive season traditionally records higher accident rates due to increased traffic volumes and risky behaviour on the roads. It urged all road users—drivers, passengers, motorcyclists, cyclists and pedestrians—to remain vigilant and strictly follow traffic regulations.

The authority noted that heavy holiday travel often encourages operators to increase trips in pursuit of profits, leading to speeding, competition on highways and widespread overloading. These practices, especially during night travel, reduce vehicle stability and braking efficiency, making accidents more severe.

Reckless driving, including dangerous overtaking and disregard for traffic rules, also tends to rise during this period as drivers rush to meet targets.

NTSA said the ongoing enforcement drive is aimed at preventing avoidable deaths and ensuring safer travel for all, reminding Kenyans that the festive season should be a time of celebration rather than loss.
