Ruto Nominates Ida Odinga for Key UN Job

President William Ruto has nominated Mama Ida Betty Odinga to serve as Kenya’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).

The appointment, made under the President’s constitutional authority, has been forwarded to Parliament for vetting and approval. Upon approval, she will succeed Ababu Namwamba, who has been redeployed as Kenya’s Ambassador to Uganda.

Mama Ida Odinga is an accomplished educationist, civic leader, and long-time advocate for social justice and gender equality. She began her professional journey as a teacher at Highway Secondary School in Nairobi before joining Kenya High School, where she taught for more than ten years and helped mentor future leaders.

According to the nomination statement, her teaching career fostered a lasting commitment to education. She is widely acknowledged for her dedication to public service and the empowerment of women. She was also the spouse of the late former Prime Minister Raila Amolo Odinga, C.G.H., who passed away on October 15, 2025.

The statement describes her life’s work as exemplifying selfless service, marked by courage, sacrifice, resilience, and a sustained commitment to advancing education and opportunities for women.

Her activism dates back to the early 1990s during Kenya’s push for multiparty democracy, when she played an active role in advocating for political reforms. She later became the founding chairperson of the League of Kenya Women Voters, using the platform to champion democracy and equality.

Over the years, she has continued to support initiatives aimed at improving the welfare of women, children, youth, and marginalized communities. In addition to her civic work, she has been involved in the private sector, including leadership roles in family-owned enterprises such as East African Spectre, a liquefied gas cylinder manufacturing firm that has contributed to Kenya’s energy industry.

Mama Ida Odinga is also recognised internationally as a strong and credible voice for Africa. Her contributions have earned her numerous awards and honours, including two Honorary Doctor of Letters degrees, the Elder of the Order of the Golden Heart (E.G.H.) in 2018, as well as the Trailblazer Award and the Human Achievers Foundation Lifetime Achievement Award.

Observers note that her nomination is likely to enhance Kenya’s role in global environmental diplomacy, particularly given the country’s status as host to UNEP. The appointment is expected to further strengthen Kenya’s leadership and influence on international environmental issues.

The nomination is now subject to parliamentary approval, as required for all Foreign Service appointments under the Constitution. If confirmed, Mama Ida Odinga will assume the role at a time when Kenya is seeking to advance sustainable development and environmental protection globally.
