“Rest Easy, My Beautiful Girl,” KPA Boss Ruto Says in Emotional Tribute

Kenya Ports Authority Managing Director Captain William Ruto was overcome with emotion on Tuesday as he paid tribute to his daughter, Mitchelle Jelimo, during a church service at CITAM Nyali in Mombasa County.

Mitchelle lost her life in a road accident in Taita Taveta County on April 3, 2026.

The memorial service, attended by family, friends, and congregants, grew emotional as Ruto publicly spoke about his daughter for the first time since her passing.

Fighting back tears, he turned to scripture for strength, quoting Psalms 34:18 about God’s closeness to the brokenhearted.

At intervals, his voice shook as he paused, bowing his head and gripping the lectern.

He said although she was no longer physically present, her spirit would live on through cherished memories, lessons, and the love she shared.

Ruto added that her laughter, courage, and love would continue to guide him, saying she would always remain in his heart and thoughts. He concluded by bidding her farewell, expressing hope that they would meet again.

Overcome with grief at the end of his tribute, he stepped away from the microphone, wiping tears as he tried to regain composure. He later returned to his seat, visibly emotional, and was comforted by close family members.

Mitchelle, who was born in 2007, was travelling with her family from Mombasa to Taveta en route to Tanzania for the Easter holiday when the accident occurred.

Reports indicate that the trailer involved in the crash had been parked by the roadside. She died at the scene, while Ruto and other family members sustained injuries and were taken to hospital, where they were later reported to be in stable condition.

Following the tragedy, leaders, maritime sector colleagues, and members of the public have sent messages of condolence, standing with the family during their time of grief.

According to the family, Mitchelle will be laid to rest on Friday, April 10, 2026, at their home in Kabarak, Nakuru County.
