Raphael Tuju: I was hiding in Kiambu

Former Cabinet Secretary Raphael Tuju has resurfaced publicly after being reported missing on Saturday. His family said Tuju and his driver went missing while en route to a radio interview, with his vehicle later found abandoned along Miotoni Lane in Karen.

In a Monday appearance at his home, Tuju revealed that he went into hiding after noticing suspicious individuals following him on Saturday. He informed police that a Land Cruiser without a number plate was tailing him.

Describing his escape, Tuju said, “I branched into Nandi Road; they were not able to branch in … it meant that they had to turn or go round to follow me. That is how I lost them.” He then abandoned his vehicle and sought refuge.

He thanked a family near the Kiambu boundary for sheltering him until late Sunday night.

At Tuju’s home, Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka expressed concerns about a possible “abduction squad,” citing it as a reason for the ordeal.

Following Tuju’s disappearance, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) launched an investigation but expressed frustration after being denied access to Tuju’s residence on Mwitu Drive. The agency urged full cooperation to ensure a swift resolution.

Tuju is also embroiled in a court dispute over Dari Business Park in Karen, linked to an alleged failure to repay a Ksh.1.9 billion loan from the East African Development Bank, initially borrowed in 2015. The properties involved include Entim Sidai Wellness Sanctuary, Tamarind Karen, and Dari Business Park.

On March 19, Tuju wrote to Inspector General Douglas Kanja, protesting what he described as an unlawful police occupation of Dari Business Park. He claimed that over 100 officers raided the premises on March 13 without a court order and remained there for nearly a week.
