Mary Muthoni, Principal Secretary for Public Health and Professional Standards, has announced the integration of Linda Mama into the Social Health Insurance Funds (SHIF), which will improve benefits for expectant mothers.

Linda Mama, a program offering free delivery services to expectant mothers, will be included in the expanded SHIF, replacing the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF), which has faced issues with corruption and fraudulent claims.
PS Muthoni reassured mothers that the government is responsive to their needs. “Linda Mama will be part of social health insurance because maternal and child health is crucial,” she stated.
She mentioned an ongoing public consultation to refine the Linda Mama program.
“NHIF insurance remains in effect until SHIF is fully implemented. Currently, NHIF cards can still be used at hospitals while we transition to SHIF,” the PS noted.
The government is investing Sh2 billion to enhance Linda Mama, with additional budget support anticipated from ongoing rationalization efforts.
Linda Mama will be a key component of SHIF, with its own budget to provide improved benefits for both regular and cesarean deliveries.
