Amos Ekale Erupe, who appeared before Eldoret Principal Magistrate Caroline Wattimah, pleaded guilty to theft, as per Section 268 and 275 of the Penal Code.

Erupe asked the court for mercy, explaining that he stole the phone while under the influence of alcohol on the day of the incident.

The offense occurred on January 3, 2025, in Moi’s Bridge town, Uasin Gishu County, when Erupe stole the phone from Paul Umbuge.

The court was informed that the complainant, who was familiar with the accused, had hired him for a casual job on his land and paid him after the work was completed. Afterward, the complainant invited Erupe for drinks at a local club. Later, he invited the accused to his home, where they spent the night.

According to the court, Erupe left the next morning while his host was still asleep, and when Umbuge woke up, he discovered that his mobile phone, which he had left charging in the living room, was missing.

In another case, a jobseeker was fined Ksh. 25,000 or sentenced to one year in prison after pleading guilty to stealing a mobile phone he had been entrusted with while a friend was playing volleyball at a public primary school field.

Nicholas Kiplagat was accused of stealing a Tecno phone valued at Ksh. 14,500, the property of Allan Kipkorir, at Uasin Gishu Primary School in Eldoret town.

Principal Magistrate Wattimah ordered Kiplagat to pay the fine or serve one year at Eldoret GK Prison.
