The leader of the Catholic Church, Pope Francis, has expressed his solidarity with Kenya in the face of devastating floods that have caused loss of life and extensive damage to infrastructure and property.
Via X, formerly Twitter, Pope Francis conveyed his spiritual closeness to the Kenyan people and his deep concern over the impact of the natural disasters, which have tragically claimed the lives of over 160 individuals.

“I stand in solidarity with the people of Kenya during this challenging period of severe flooding, which has resulted in numerous casualties and extensive destruction. Let us join in prayer for all those affected by this calamity,” stated Pope Francis.
His message coincides with reports of flooding in various regions, including Mai Mahiu and Kitengela. In Mai Mahiu, more than 70 fatalities occurred when an aging dam breached its banks during the night, sweeping away homes and belongings. Additionally, landslides in Murang’a claimed at least six lives, with several others sustaining injuries.

In Garissa county, over 23 individuals remain missing following the capsizing of a boat on the swollen Tana River, prompting ongoing rescue efforts.
The floods have led to the closure of numerous roads, impeding the movement of both people and goods.

In Kitengela, six individuals were successfully rescued after their residences were submerged, while the Athi River-Namanga Road and other key routes, such as the Eastern Bypass, Thika Bypass, and Enterprise Road in Nairobi’s Industrial Area, have been partially or fully closed due to heavy flooding.
