Detectives in Mwingi Central Sub-County, Kitui County, are investigating the deaths of a couple whose bodies were discovered inside their locked home in an incident police suspect may have been a murder-suicide.
The incident was reported on Thursday, July 2, 2026, after residents raised concerns about a foul smell coming from the house in Mumbuni Location.

Officers who responded to the scene found the three-roomed brick house locked from the inside. With the help of members of the public, they forced the door open and discovered two decomposing bodies in a bedroom, lying about a metre apart.
The deceased were identified as 34-year-old John Vundi Munywoki and his 25-year-old wife, Mawia Vundi.
Police said John was found hanging from the roof rafters with a sisal rope tied around his neck, while Mawia’s body was lying on the floor with visible head injuries.
According to preliminary investigations, John had on Saturday, June 27, left the couple’s three-year-old child with his parents, saying he and his wife were travelling to nearby Kisovo Village to visit her family.
When the couple failed to return and a strong smell later emerged from the house, the parents informed the area chief, who alerted police.
Investigators are yet to establish exactly what transpired. Police said no murder weapon or suicide note was recovered at the scene.
Crime scene detectives documented the scene before the bodies were taken to Mwingi Level IV Hospital Mortuary, where post-mortem examinations are expected to determine the cause of death. Investigations remain ongoing.
In a separate incident, detectives in Igembe Central Sub-County, Meru County, have opened a murder investigation following the death of a 51-year-old man.
The case was also reported on Thursday, July 2, 2026.
Police responded to Mukululu Village, where they found the body of Moses Kathi lying in a pool of blood.

The deceased had suffered multiple deep cuts to the head and back, according to police.
Early investigations suggest the killing could be linked to a long-standing land dispute involving the deceased and his two brothers.
Officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations processed the scene before the body was moved to Nyambene Sub-County Hospital Mortuary for a post-mortem examination.
No suspect had been arrested by the time of the report, and investigations into the killing are continuing.
