Two suspects were fatally shot in separate confrontations over the weekend as police intensified the fight against crime in Butere, Kakamega County, and Dagoretti, Kiambu County.
In Butere’s Songa Mbele village, police reported that one Thomas Mboya was shot dead after attempting to free two suspects arrested for stealing a motorcycle and a plastic chair. Armed with a panga, Mboya allegedly charged at officers and threatened to attack them, prompting one officer to open fire with his AK-47.
The body was taken to the mortuary for a postmortem, while the arrested suspects remain in custody for interrogation.
In another case in Dagoretti, Kikuyu sub-county, police said a suspect was gunned down during a dawn confrontation with plainclothes officers. His two accomplices fled into a nearby thicket. A toy pistol and a panga were recovered at the scene. The body was moved to the mortuary as police launched a manhunt for the fugitives.
Meanwhile, in Butere, four suspected members of the Gaza gang were arrested after threatening a local chief with arson during a funeral gathering in Shihara village. The gang, armed with six pangas, allegedly chased the chief away when he tried to stop a “Disco Matanga” party.
Police intervened, arresting the suspects who are set to face charges of preparing to commit a felony.
Authorities say operations have been stepped up in both regions to curb rising incidents of armed robberies and gang activity.
