Parliament Approves Sammy Chepkwony as SRC Chairperson

The National Assembly has officially approved Sammy Chepkwony as the new Chairperson of the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC). The approval came during a special sitting held on Thursday morning.

Alongside Chepkwony, MPs also approved the appointment of six other members to the SRC. These include Martin Kizito Ong’onyi, nominated by the Defence Council; Mohamed Aden, nominated by the Senate to represent County Governments; and Jane Njage, nominated to represent the Teachers Service Commission (TSC). Other approved members are Gilda Odera, representing the Federation of Kenya Employers; Geoffrey Omondi, nominated by the Central Organisation of Trade Unions (COTU); and Leonid Ashiundu, representing the Association of Professional Societies of East Africa (APSEA).

Chepkwony’s nomination was made by President William Ruto on November 12, 2024, and he will succeed Lyn Mengich, whose six-year term ended in September 2024. A human resource expert, Chepkwony’s extensive background in workforce management and organizational effectiveness is expected to be instrumental in addressing the SRC’s challenges.

Chepkwony underwent vetting by the Departmental Committee on Labor on November 22, 2024, alongside other nominees for the commission. A report on the vetting was subsequently tabled in Parliament on November 26.

Before his appointment, Chepkwony served as the Managing Director and CEO of People Centric Management Limited. His career includes senior roles such as Senior Consultant at Pricewaterhouse Coopers (PWC), HR Director at Kenya Airways, HR Manager at Nairobi Bottlers Ltd, and Regional HR Director at Aga Khan University. He also chaired the Tata Chemicals Magadi Provident Fund.

Chepkwony holds an MBA and a Bachelor of Commerce degree from the University of Nairobi. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Human Resources Management, a Certified Human Resource Professional (CHRP) in Kenya, and a member of the Institute of Directors-Kenya. He has also completed a Trustee Development Program.
