Orengo Criticizes Ruto For Condemning Judiciary

Siaya Governor James Orengo has joined others in condemning President William Ruto for his recent attacks on the Judiciary. Orengo issued a statement on January 3, 2023, warning against disobedience of court orders by the President as an inappropriate response to dissent.

“This act of disobedience goes against our constitutional order. There are legal mechanisms for overturning judicial decisions obtained through fraud or addressing a corrupt judiciary. The office of the president has numerous tools, and disregarding inconvenient court orders is certainly not one of them. However, every citizen, including public officers, has the power to resist illegal orders from their superiors,” remarked Orengo.

Several leaders, including Rarieda MP Otiende Amollo and former Defence CS Eugine Wamalwa, have cautioned against Ruto’s threats to disobey court orders that he perceives as being influenced by corrupt judges. Amollo expressed concerns that Ruto’s defiance could lead to rigging the 2027 elections and disregarding any court orders related to it.

“William Ruto is revealing his true colors! Court orders mean nothing to him. I hope CJ Martha Koome will reconsider the soft approach to this regime and assert the full authority of the courts. If not, he will rig 2027 and defy Supreme Court orders,” warned Amollo.

Eugine Wamalwa, leader of the Democratic Action Party Kenya (DAP-K), described Ruto’s statements as “dangerously reckless” and warned against selectively obeying court decisions, stating that such actions would undermine the rule of law.

Ruto had earlier accused some judges of corruption and collusion with cartels to sabotage government projects. He declared his commitment to preventing these perceived corrupt practices and disrupting reforms that would benefit those engaged in fraudulent activities.
