The blaze erupted around 2 a.m. on Sunday on the fourth floor of a four-storey apartment in the Congo area, Stage 2, and is believed to have been triggered by an electrical malfunction, according to police and eyewitness accounts.
Thick smoke quickly engulfed the building as the fire spread rapidly. Firefighters arrived shortly after and managed to contain the flames.
Nairobi police commander George Sedah confirmed that one person had died and several others sustained injuries and were taken to hospital. The deceased’s body was transferred to the mortuary as investigations into the cause of the fire continue.
The tragedy is the latest in a series of deadly fires reported in Nairobi’s informal settlements. Authorities have been urging residents in these areas to adopt basic fire safety practices to help prevent future incidents.

In May 2025 alone, at least 15 people died in separate fires in Kibera, Mukuru Kwa Njenga, and Mathare – some of Nairobi’s largest slums.
Nairobi Regional Commissioner Katee Mwanza emphasized the government’s commitment to disaster preparedness, including early warning systems, public training, and improved coordination with counties to enhance response measures.

He called on the public to remain alert, report hazards promptly, and collaborate with local authorities to implement safety strategies.
Mwanza also acknowledged that poor infrastructure in informal settlements continues to hinder emergency responses, making it more difficult to manage such tragedies.
