During the memorial service for the late Jaramogi Oginga Odinga in Kisumu, the Christian names of the Odinga family members were disclosed on Saturday.
The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) shared this revelation on X, considering it a valuable lesson learned during the commemorative event at Ofafa Memorial Hall. The tweet highlighted that the Party Leader’s Christian name is Joshua, Jaramogi Oginga Odinga’s Christian name was Nicodemus, and Oburu’s is Caleb.
While Raila has been commonly known as Raila Amollo Odinga and Oburu as Oburu Odinga, their late father, Jaramogi Ajuma Oginga Odinga, was widely recognized by his full name.
The family’s use of Christian names, previously undisclosed, became known during the memorial, shedding light on this hidden aspect of their identity. The event marked the 30th anniversary of Jaramogi Oginga Odinga’s passing, with Raila organizing the memorial service to honor his father’s legacy and contributions to Kenya’s history.
The occasion brought together various leaders and featured physical and virtual addresses by renowned scholars, pan-Africanists, thought leaders, and journalists.
Jaramogi, a freedom fighter, founding vice president, businessman, teacher, farmer, and politician, played a pivotal role in Kenya’s struggle for independence and later served as vice president under Mzee Jomo Kenyatta.
