Oburu Denies Taking Directives From State House

Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party leader Oburu Oginga has rejected allegations that he receives instructions from State House, saying he makes decisions independently based on what he believes is best for his constituents.

Oburu said his many years in politics have given him the experience to determine when and how to act without outside influence.

Speaking on Sunday during the thanksgiving ceremony for Health Principal Secretary Ouma Oluga, the ODM leader insisted he does not operate under orders from the executive.

“I want to tell those claiming that I take instructions from State House that I have lived longer than them. I know when to take instructions and how to do it, and no one will teach me,” he said.

He emphasized that he has never taken directives in his political career and will continue to make decisions guided by what he considers right for his people.

Earlier, on March 3, the ODM Parliamentary Group endorsed several major party decisions, including confirming Oburu as the party leader and supporting plans to negotiate a coalition with the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) ahead of the 2027 General Election.

The resolutions were reached during a joint ODM parliamentary group meeting held on March 3, 2026, under Oburu’s leadership.

In a statement released after the meeting, members said they reviewed recent party activities, discussed upcoming programmes in and outside Parliament, and agreed on positions regarding key issues.

The meeting was also the first ODM parliamentary group session since the one addressed by the late former party leader Raila Odinga at the Argyle Hotel on September 22, 2025.

Following what the statement described as “frank discussions,” MPs approved and upheld recent decisions made by the party’s Central Committee and National Executive Committee (NEC).

Among the decisions supported was the Central Committee’s endorsement of the ongoing working relationship between ODM and UDA.

The MPs also backed plans for structured negotiations between the two parties aimed at forming a coalition ahead of the 2027 elections.

Additionally, the Parliamentary Group supported efforts to seek compensation for victims of past election-related human rights violations, committing to work with partners and explore alternative ways to ensure the matter is addressed urgently.

In another move, the MPs endorsed a decision by party organs for ODM to withdraw from the Azimio coalition.

They also approved the NEC’s plan to convene a special National Delegates Convention on March 27, 2027.

As part of the next steps, the ODM Parliamentary Group agreed to hold a joint meeting with UDA MPs next Tuesday to review progress on a ten-point agenda agreed upon by the two parties.

The group also authorized the party leader to begin internal preparations, including determining representation and procedures, ahead of the planned negotiations with UDA.
