New Rules Set 30-Minute Limit for New Year’s Eve Fireworks

The government has imposed restrictions on the use of fireworks during the upcoming festive season, allowing displays only at designated venues such as clubs, hotels, churches, schools, and other approved locations.

Hassan Joho, the Cabinet Secretary for Mining and Blue Economy, confirmed that fireworks displays will be confined to a 30-minute window at midnight on December 31. He made it clear that only authorized venues, approved by the State Department for Mining, would be permitted to hold these displays.

Joho urged the public to follow the Ministry’s regulations, stressing that any parties conducting fireworks displays must obtain the necessary permits. He reminded citizens that fireworks displays must comply with the Explosives Act, Cap 115 of the Laws of Kenya, and should be organized in an orderly manner to avoid disruptions to the public.

In addition, Joho specified that in urban and built-up areas, display shells would be limited to a maximum caliber of four inches. He also emphasized that only qualified and experienced personnel would be authorized to handle aerial shells and other types of display fireworks.
